Eastern Redbud
Cercis canadensis,  Z4 - 24ft.
Small handsome multi-stem tree with red buds opening into purplish-pink flowers before leaf break in spring.
Widely planted small ornamental tree and native to eastern U.S.
Judas Redbud - Judas Tree
Cercis siliquastrum,  Z7 - 40ft.
Larger than the other Redbud trees. Bears small purple/rose coloured 'pea like' flowers before leaf break.
Chinese Redbud
Cercis chinensis,   Z6 - 25ft.
Small tree, upright, usually multi-trunked. Bears rose-purple flowers in absolute profusion-slightly larger than the Eastern Redbud. Very pretty little garden tree.
Japanese Dwarf Flowering Quince
Chaenomeles japonica,  Z5 - 3ft.
Coral orange-red bloom in spring. Specimen plant or easily sheared to a low hedge.
Tolerant of heat, cold and variable soils.
Lawson False Cypress
Chamaecyparis lawsoniana,   Z6 - 75ft. (50-75 seeds)
Also known as a 'Port Orford Cedar'. Densely pyramidal in form with soft graceful bluish-green foliage.
Quite stately and elegant in habit.
Hinoki Cypress
Chamaecyparis obtusa,   Z5 - 70ft.  (50-75 seeds)
A Japanese native. Evergreen with conical habit, spreading pendulous branches. 10-20 ft. wide.
Small orange brown cones, shredding red-brown bark.
Mourning Cypress
Chamaecyparis funebris,   Z8 - 55ft.  (50-75 seeds)
Unusual conifer, pronounced drooping branches often found planted in cemeteries in the Mediterranean region. Exhibits a drooping 'mournful' appearance.
Chinese Fringe Tree
Chionanthus retusa,   Z5 - 30ft.  (15-18 large seeds)
A small/meduim size flowering tree bearing a profusion of fragrant snowy white fringed flowers followed by dark blue fruit. Habit is mounding and spreading with dark green leathery leaves.
Old Man's Beard
Chionanthus virginicus,  Z5 - 30ft., (15-18 large seeds)
Similiar to 'retusa' but hardier with dark glossy green leaves 8 inch white flower panicles. Will tolerate some shade but flowers best in full sun. Native to the U.S.
Traveller's Joy
Clematis vitalba,  Z5 - 25ft.
Vigorous climber. 1 inch white flowers. Almond scented. Can be rampant in some climates and needs to be kept in check.
Italian Clematis
Clematis viticella,  Z5 - 15ft.
Blooms July to Sept. Rich deep purple flowers. Can be rampant in some climates.
American Yellowwood
Cladrastis lutea,   Z4  - 50ft.
Cladrastis Lutea is an attractive shade tree and ornamental specimen and will grow up to 50-60 ft at maturity (40 ft. wide). The Yellowwood was recently designated as the Official Bicentennial Tree of Tennessee and is considered to be a native Tennessee ornamental tree of unsurpassed beauty. Flowering in late spring the Yellowood bears fragrant wisteria-like white flowers in large 10-12 inch drooping panicles at the end of each branch, the hanging flower clusters will pretty much cover a mature tree in late spring and is spectacular when doing so, it blooms more profusely in alternate years. Its mature habit is very broad with a rounded crown. Pinnate leaves (7-11 leaflets) open as yellowish green and turn bright green in summer and back to yellow in fall.
