Bristlecone Pine
Pinus aristata, Z5 - 40ft., 60 seeds
Picturesque, dwarfed pine when grown in tough conditions. Tough, slow
grower, lives forever. Becoming rarer in nature. Often cultivated as a
Bonsai tree.
Afghan Pine
Pinus eldarica, Z8 - 70ft., 50-60 seeds
Popular in the South West for its ability to withstand exposed
conditions, dry winds and extremely alkaline soils.
Japanese Red Pine
Pinus densiflora, Z4 - 40ft., 60 seeds
Long showy bright blue-green needles. Irregular crooked growth habit
and orange-red peeling bark make this an interesting and picturesque
Pine tree. Often cultivated as a Bonsai tree.
Ponderosa Pine
Pinus ponderosa, Z4 - 150ft., 50-60 seeds
Also known as a Western Yellow Pine. Huge at maturity. Fast growing,
tall and straight with dark yellow green needles.
Italian Stone Pine
Pinus pinea, Z6 - 80ft., 15-18 large seeds
Asymmetrical and flat-topped in habit, 6" bright green stiff needles,
5" cones, 1/2" edible seeds (pignolia nuts).
Himalayan White Pine
Pinus wallichiana, Z6 - 120ft., 60 seeds
Considered to be a beautiful pine for larger areas. Very graceful and
broad at maturity. Unusual 6-8" drooping needle habit gives this tree a
soft textured effect. Used as an ornamental planting in Europe. Often
cultivated as a Bonsai as well.
Lace Bark Pine
Pinus bungeana, Z5 - 40ft., 40-45 large seeds
An ornamental Pine tree noted for its long lustrous bright green
needles and unusual bark which eventually exfoliates and shows
irregular coloured patterns. Pyrimidal in habit and often multi-trunked
though can easily be trained to a single trunk. A good landscape
choice. Originated in China. Bonsai too.
Japanese Black Pine
Pinus thunbergiana, 'Mikawa', Z5 - 80ft., 60 seeds
Widely planted ornamental pine. Shears best of any pine, bright green
slightly twisted needles-often irregular in habit and a favourite
Bonsai selection.
Austrian Pine
Pinus nigra, Z5 - 100 ft., 50-60 seeds
A handsome species; dense and cone-shaped when young, broadening at the
top with age; may produce a number of low trunks; deeply furrowed bark,
gray and dark brown; shiny dark green needles to 6 1/2"; tolerant of
urban, seaside, and other difficult conditions.
Mexican Pine
Pinus patula, Z7 - 50 ft., 45-50 seeds
The slender, gracefully hanging leaves {needles} are 12" long,...making
this a rather striking tree" (Wyman); grass-green needles, cones to 4
1/2"; often multitrunked; native to Mexico; sometimes used in Southern
California.
Eastern White Pine
Pinus strobus, Z4 - 140 ft., 60 seeds
"One of the best pines for ornamental use" (Wyman); conical when young,
open when older; branches slightly ascending; blue-green needles to 4";
fast growing; native to eastern North America.
Scots Pine
Pinus sylvestris, Z2 - 50ft., 60 seeds
Very hardy. Evergreen tree in youth has a conical shape, becoming a
flat-topped, spreading tree with age can be very attractive when mature
30' to 50' tall, with an almost equal spread horizontal branching habit.
Pinyon Pine
Pinus edulis, Z6 - 16ft., NOW SOLD OUT
A small two-needle pine, the Pinyon Pine is a slow grower. Picturesque
symmetrical growth habit; horizontal branches, bushy when young with a
flatish or irregular crown at maturity. 1.5-inch curved, blue-green or
yellow-green stiff needles in bundles of two. A good Bonsai candidate.
2-inch cones bearing edible pine nuts are produced at maturity.
Japanese White Pine
Pinus parviflora, Z5 - 50ft., 40-45 seeds
A very popular choice for Bonsai culture, this conifer produces
branches which broaden with age to become a picturesque evergreen
pyramid. The Japanese White Pine is slow growing with green or
blue-green 1.5-inch needles. "A choice, extremely graceful small
conifer...a perfect tree for the small place...artistic growth habit"
(Dirr). Salt-tolerant. Native to Japan.
Jeffreyi Pine
Pinus jeffreyi, Z6 - 200 ft., 45 large seeds
Pyramidal form with drooping branches; reddish bark & 5-10" pale
blue green needles. The Jeffreyi Pine is grown ornamentally in the U.S.
and Europe and is a large west coast native pine.
