GENUS - Acer
Species - palmatum, japonicum & sieboldianum.
Japanese Maples (as well as many of the other smaller flowering trees)
can make attractive plantings when grown in large terra cotta pots by
the door, on the deck or along the path. They like some protection from
extreme midday sun particularly when young.
We start all of our trees in small pots or small outdoor nursery beds
and grow them on for a year before transplanting. Japanese Maples will
grow well in zone 5 which is our own zone as long as they are not in an
exposed position. Warmer zones 6, 7 and 8 are also appropriate. They
can also be grown in colder zones (3 and 4) in largish pots and
allowed to go dormant prior to storing in unheated winter shed or
garage over winter.
The seeds of cultivars (cv.) will not reproduce exact replicas, however
the variable progeny is often superior plant material. We typically
find seedlings exhibiting some of the characteristics found in the
parent while others can & will revert to the species (sp.) form.
The amount of variation among the progeny of cultivars is unpredictable
but usually interesting, beautiful and occasionally unique.
Except where noted all Regular size packages of our Japanese Maples
contain 15-20 or more of our selected seeds.
